The Grayson Highlands in the state of Virginia are the location of Mount Rogers, Virginia's tallest mountain at 5729' above sea level. The environment is extremely diverse with alpine mountain tops and thick jungle like forest in the lower elevations. Red Spruce is prevalent in the higher elevations with some reaching heights over one hundred feet tall.
Winters are extremely harsh with deep snows and subzero temperatures. Fraser fir can be found in the Mt Rogers National Recreation Area. The higher elevations are reminiscent of Colorado and Wyoming. A population of wild ponies inhabits the mountains here and longhorn cattle are also left to open range the areas within the wilderness.
